Liberty Jail, Independence and Winter Quarters

June 23rd was a Sunday and was a perfect day to attend church in Liberty, MO then explore the church history sites in the area.  We were humbled once again visiting Liberty Jail and learning of the great sacrifice and dedication that Joseph Smith and others with him gave.  These men were unjustly imprisoned for months in this basement jail in horrible conditions.  While in Liberty Jail, Joseph Smith also received a very inspiring revelation found in Doctrine and Covenants section 121.  Every time we visit Liberty Jail it feels like we are on sacred ground.

We also explored Far West and Adam-ondi-Ahman while in the Liberty, MO area.  We thought of our ancestors who had lived here and had faithfully endured persecution from mobs seeking to take their lives.

We next visited Winter Quarters near Omaha, Nebraska.  We had several ancestors who stayed here while waiting to make the journey west to Utah.  Conditions were harsh here as well from exposure to a cold winter.  So many people died here.  We visited the cemetery where some of our ancestors are buried.  One ancestor, Gardner Clark, is buried beneath the memorial monument.  The statue always brings tender feelings.  It depicts parents burying their baby at Winter Quarters before continuing their journey west.  Few pioneer families escaped without similar hardships.

We enjoyed learning more in the Visitor's Center at Winter Quarters.  The children had fun dressing up as pioneers as they explored.  Amy was quite upset when it was time to take off the pioneer clothing!

It was special to us to see some articles of our ancestors on display in the Visitor's Center.  Even better, the violin of Jared's ancestor (Isaac Morley) was on display right next to the night stand of my ancestor (Charles C. Rich)!  We had to pose for a picture.

Leah fell in love with this picture in the Visitor's Center:

It would be nice to find a small print of this picture for her.

We ended our Sabbath Winter Quarters visit outside of the temple there.

Way cool that you guys knew who your ancestor's were and were able to spot out their belongings. Makes the visiting centers and museums come alive and to be able to appreciate them more.
